Schools pull out of rugby ranking system

I am not one of those old boys that wears his school brand 20 years after leaving school but I love my school and support it unashamedly. But one thing I do not agree with is the pressure that schools, players, parent and public put on 1st team players at school level.

A friend of mine, BigBev, alerted me to a story on rugby365.co.za that has surfaced. Certain Private school's have all banded together and decided to take their schools out of the rugby ranking systems available online. Not only are these schools pulling out of the rugby rankings, but are also pulling out of any ranking system at all.

The schools involved have noted that they feel that the ranking systems create unhealthy competition between school which they say has an indirect effect on "marketing, scholarships and post-matric issues, as well as relationships between schools, parents and old boys."

I think that this is a great move by these schools, however rugby365.co.za does have some interesting rebuttles:

How are schools going to stop people from ranking their rugby if the results of fixtures are made public? What is to stop me for example, from starting my own ranking site and keeping it up to date with the published results from the weekend?

They also noted that its a bit tought to blame the ranking sites and systems for bad blood between schools.

I think it's an interesting argument.

hmmm, will ask my bro about his opinion on this one!School rivalry does get intense, but i dont think this is going to stop it!
ja, i think it is a bit lame to say that all unhealthy competition comes from ranking... but hey, im not at school any more and i went to st davids (not the best rugby in the country)
I think this is just stupid. Private schools have thrived on overcharging parents because amongst other things they dominate school boy rugby. Now that the time has been taken to rank the annual performance of the schools, they don't necessarily look too good. Their reputation is on the line and people don't like it.

They must remember that they are there to teach primarily. Sport is part of this. The results of their matric exams should be the most important issue. Sadly we know that this is never the case and that rugby results matter. I love the system that has been adopted. There is no additional pressure on the boys in these teams. The pressure exists because their results are bad, not becasue a website confirms that they are bad. Pupils and players will already be dejected from their performances.

They need to deal with it and spend more time on trying to get better results and less time clicking on a website that confirms that they lost.

This is a joke!

I mostly agree with what you are saying. I think that pressure is there whether schools are being ranked or not. But I have been apart of this whole "school rivalry" issue and I must confess that tension exists between school boys partly because of where their school is ranked. this tension offen hightens to violence and aggression that is unnecessary.
